Culture
Durham practically brims with culture. The city is part of the "research triangle" in conjunction with Raleigh and Chapel Hill, and contains many cultural attractions unique to the city. A sampling of these include the historic shopping district Brightleaf Square, the beautiful Museum of Life and Science and the North Carolina Museum of Art, featuring the work of celebrated artists from the world over.
History
Originating in 1853, the city of Durham has a long history with the railroad, tobacco and textile industries. These industries helped expand the city until the mid-20th century, when population decreased due to the Great Depression. The city managed to recover in the 1970s, with an increase in housing development and research business. Currently, companies within the research triangle are the largest employees, with Duke University a close second.
